
Tar Heels Sweep NC State 3-0

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Emily McGee notched 16 kills and 13 digs to propel North Carolina over rival NC State 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-20) Tuesday night at Reynolds Coliseum. The Tar Heels earned their sixth sweep of the season to improve to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.
McGee dazzled earning her third double-double of the season. The Naperville, Ill., native posted at least five kills a set and committed just one attack error. Cora Harms registered her team-leading sixth double-double amassing 33 assists and 10 digs.
Seniors Suzanne Haydel, Courtney Johnston and Christine Vaughen combined for 25 kills and nine blocks. Libero Kaylie Gibson anchored the defense with a match-high 17 digs.
"It was a tough match in a tough environment and I am proud of our team," said head coach Joe Sagula. "It is important to start out 1-0 in our league, especially on the road. I thought Emily McGee was sensational tonight with only one error to 16 kills. She really got us going tonight and played with a great amount of energy."
Carolina limited NC State to a .000 hitting percentage to claim the first set 25-20. Shelbey Bleke, Vaughen and McGee each notched a pair of block assists apiece to hinder the Wolfpack offense. McGee collected five powerful kills to zero errors as the Tar Heels led by as many as six. UNC posted eight total blocks to just seven attack errors in set one.
The Tar Heels unloaded a .343 hitting percentage to win the second frame 25-19. McGee continued to impress sporting six kills and five digs to lead Carolina. NC State sliced the Tar Heel to as close as one at 15-14, but the Tar Heels opened a 5-0 spurt. Carolina continued to hinder the Wolfpack offense forcing 16 attack errors through two sets.
UNC never trailed in set three to claim the frame 25-20 and match 3-0. McGee posted five kills and digs to lead the Tar Heels. NC State inched to within one point late in the frame, but Carolina used a 6-0 run to push back in front of the Wolfpack 21-16. The Tar Heels won their season-best sixth straight match and claimed their first league match victory.
Carolina will be back in action Friday hosting Maryland at 7 p.m. and Saturday hosting Boston College at 5 p.m. from Carmichael Arena.
