CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Courtney Johnston uncorked a game-high 15 kills to lead North Carolina over Appalachian State 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena in game two of Tar Heel Classic. The Tar Heels won their fourth straight match to improve to 8-4 on the year.
Johnston led a powerful UNC attack that amassed 51 kills and a .297 match hitting percentage. Senior Christine Vaughen added nine kills and classmate Suzanne Haydel chipped in seven. Setter Cora Harms registered 32 assists to service the Carolina attack and Kaylie Gibson added 18 digs to anchor the defense.
Seniors Haydel and Johnston combined for 10 kills to lead UNC to a 25-22 set one victory. Gibson notched half of her match total digs in the first frame as Carolina held the Mountaineers to a .118 hitting percentage.
Carolina ripped a match-best .405 hitting percentage to claim the second frame 25-17. UNC controlled the entire tempo of the frame posting a 77% sideout percentage. Johnston unloaded six kills and sophomore Emily McGee added four to pace the Tar Heel attack.
The Tar Heels fought off a late Appalachian State rally to win the third frame 25-23 and match 3-0. Shelbey Bleke, Johnston and Vaughen combined for 12 kills to just one error to anchor UNC.
Carolina concludes the 2010 Tar Heel Classic Saturday night hosting Temple at 7:30 p.m. from Carmichael Arena.
