Hershey, Pa. - Thomas Scotton went undefeated in his three matches as North Carolina's wrestling squad opened their dual season with wins against Drexel and Lock Haven at Saturday's Duals at Hershey. Mike Rappo and Nick Tenpenny also went 2-0 for the Tar Heels, who dropped a 25-10 decision to Kent State in their third match.
Corey Mock and Zac Bennett also logged two victories on the day, finishing with records of 2-1. Freshmen Andre Petroski and Antonio Giorgio grabbed victories in the only match each wrestled.
In the opener against Drexel, UNC won all eight matches contested on the mat and was awarded two forfeits en route to a 46-0 victory over Drexel. Carolina registered falls in three weight classes, as Rocco Wellek (141 pounds), Mock (157) and Petroski (174) all pinned their opponents. Giorgio also recorded a 13-4 major decision victory at 184 pounds. It was the first dual contest for freshmen Mock, Petroski and Giorgio.
In the Tar Heels' second match of the day, Carolina dropped bouts at the first four weight classes before rallying to win five consecutive weight classes and defeat Lock Haven 19-16. Tenpenny followed up wins by decision from Mock, Scotton and Ferguson with a major decision victory to knot the score at 13. 197-pounder Zac Bennett then pinned Lock Haven's Travis Stern in only 1:27 to put the Tar Heels ahead to stay.
Carolina won three individual contests in its finale, a 25-10 loss to Kent State. Rappo took a 9-2 decision at 133-pounds, which brings his record to 5-1 with the only defeat being an injury default. Scotton earned his third win of the day with an 11-3 major decision victory and Tenpenny finished the day unbeaten when he won 5-1 at 184 pounds. Mock took 19th-ranked Matt Cathell to overtime before he was pinned in a sudden victory situation.
Carolina will be back in action again next Sunday when they host the ACC Challenge, facing Chattanooga, Wisconsin and UNC-Greensboro.
