Wrestling Student-Athlete Summer Internship Spotlight

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Several North Carolina wrestlers spent this past summer developing professional skills for the future, working internships across the country.

Omaury Alvarez: IMG Academy – Bradenton, Fla.
Senior Omaury Alvarez interned this summer with IMG Academy and their newly formed wrestling program, located in Bradenton, Fla. In his role, Alvarez worked as a camp coach running two sessions a day. Off the mat, the Dalton, Ga. product helped the program with organizational duties, which included social media posts promoting their camps, program and the IMG campus.

Matthew Botello: Raymond James – Omaha, Neb.
Sophomore Matthew Botello spent the summer with Raymond James, working with their Omaha, Neb. location. In his role, the Hingham, Mass. native developed skills organizing client's financial portfolios. Last year during his freshman campaign, Botello won 15 matches on the mat, while collecting ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition in the classroom.

Mikey Calcagno: Shelco – Raleigh, N.C.
Sophomore Mikey Calcagno spent the summer with Shelco, in nearby Raleigh. During his internship, the Elmhurst, Ill. product assisted site superintendents managing construction site locations. During his true freshman campaign, Calcagno won nine matches and earned a spot on the 2026 ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Collin Carrigan: Triangle Electrical Services – Chapel Hill, N.C.
Tar Heel 174-pounder Collin Carrigan spent the summer working with Triangle Electrical Services located in Chapel Hill. A two-time ACC Academic Roll honoree, Carrigan finished third at the ACC Championships and earned his first berth to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland last season.

Derek Guanajuato: The Home Depot – Atlanta, Ga.
Entering his fourth year in Chapel Hill, Derek Guanajuato worked for The Home Depot at their corporate offices in Atlanta, Ga. as a merchandising intern. In his role, the Eloy, Ariz. native analyzed sales and customer data to identify merchandising opportunities, working to improve the customer's online shopping experience.

Brendan McCrone: Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial – Raleigh, N.C.
Newcomer Brendan McCrone spent his first few months in the Triangle working with Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial in Raleigh. In his role, McCrone attended weekly meetings with the company, learned skills on developing financial plans, and ensured customer satisfaction. A transfer from Ohio State, the Willoughby, Ohio native was a two-time NCAA qualifier during his time with the Buckeyes.

Colin Nugent: Chad Richards State Farm – Raleigh, N.C.
Senior Colin Nugent spent the summer working for Chad Richards' State Farm branch located in Raleigh, as a sales associate. In his role, the Boxford, Mass. product worked to connect potential customers to the office's agents.

Joshua Ogunsanya: North Carolina Department of Justice – Raleigh, N.C.
Graduate student Joshua Ogunsanya, currently enrolled in UNC's School of Law pursuing his doctorate degree, spent the summer with the North Carolina Department of Justice. In his role as a legal intern with the consumer protection division, Ogunsanya conducted legal research, assisted in document review and analysis, and participated in litigation-related work. A three-time NCAA qualifier during his collegiate career on the mat, Ogunsanya returns to the mat this season after earned an NCAA berth during his first season as a Tar Heel in 2025.

Aidan Schlett: Procare HR – Minnetonka, Minn.
184-pounder Aidan Schlett worked with Procare HR in their talent acquisitions department. During the summer, the Glen Rock, N.J. native assisted new hires beginning their positions, playing a role in the on-boarding process.

Joey Showalter: Legacy Private Client Services – Raleigh, N.C.
UNC 157-pounder Joey Showalter worked in Raleigh this summer, with Legacy Private Client Services – New York Life Insurance. In his internship, Showalter attended client meetings, and developed skills to assist and present customers with their financial portfolios.

Carson Tenold: Midtown Pain and Spine – Raleigh, N.C.
Fifth-year Carson Tenold worked in nearby Raleigh at Midtown Pain and Spine as a medical assistant. During the summer, the Gilbertville, Iowa native split time with clinical and administrative duties, working daily with the office's patients. During his time in Chapel Hill thus far, Tenold is a five-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient in the classroom.

Marco Tocci: Spartan (Remote)
Senior Marco Tocci worked this summer with Spartan, assisting the company in festival support and management. In his role, the Lititz, Pa. product helped with event setup, participant support and course operations, ensuring all customers were provided with a safe and successful race experience.
