FARMVILLE, Va. - Behind a pair of goals from junior Danielle Forword, the fifth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team won its seventh consecutive game Sunday afternoon, beating host Longwood 3-1 at the Athletics Complex. The Tar Heels improved to 8-2 with the win, while the Lancers fell to 5-5.
Next up for the Tar Heels is an Atlantic Coast Conference battle with Wake Forest, which beat UNC 2-1 in penalty strokes on Sept. 5 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Saturday's game at Henry Stadium has been set for noon.
Coming off Saturday's 2-1 conference-opening win over ninth-ranked Duke in Durham, UNC made the 2 1/2-hour trip to Farmville on Sunday morning. Neither team scored through the first 20 minutes of play, then Forword got two goals in quick succession. At the 20:53 mark, she grabbed a rebound after a saved shot and scored to put UNC up 1-0. Just 42 seconds later, she carried the ball into the circle and scored her second goal of the game and 15th of the season.
Sophomore Katelyn Falgowski added another on a counter-attack just before halftime to put Carolina up 3-0 at the break. Junior Illse Davids assisted on the play.
Longwood scored its goal at the 51:58 mark, when Carla Binnewies sent a shot into the upper corner of the cage past UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell.
For the game, UNC had 20 shots to the Lancers' six and led in corners 8-5. West made 10 saves on the day and Longwood got two more defensive saves. Each Carolina goalkeeper had a save, with Jackie Kintzer playing the first half and O'Donnell the second.
"This was a good challenge for our team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We like to prepare for the postseason with back-to-back games, so driving up today and playing Longwood was a good test. We played very well, but Longwood was outstanding defensively."
