
Distance Runners Fare Well At Duke Invite

DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field team was back in action again on Friday as several Tar Heel distance runners made the short trek to Durham to take part in the Duke Invitational. Freshman Adam Cunningham posted a fifth place finish in the 1500 when he ran a time of 3:52.59. Carolina will be in action again tomorrow when they take part in meets at Texas, Duke and NC A&T.
The men's 1500 featured six Tar Heels with Cunningham taking the top spot on the team with his 3:52.59, just five seconds shy of a regional mark. John Curtiss was not far behind as he crossed the line in 3:52.80 for an overall of finish of seventh. Also posting a top 20 finish was senior Alex Ray who took home 16th with a race of 3:55.70. Sam Pompei (27th, 3:59.02), Nick Krouse (30th, 3:59.96) and Matt Hamrick (44th, 4:09.41) also competed for Carolina in the race.
Morgan Stengel competed in the 3000-meter run and came out with a 12th place finish with a time of 10:26.52, while Ian Bracy finished ninth on the men's side as he posted a time of 8:35.83. In the 5000, Stephen Bloemeke finished 13th (15:12.29) in Section B. Meanwhile in the A Section, Zack Dawson posted a time of 14:54.37 for a 15th overall finish just ahead of Brock Baker (18th, 15:01.01). Lauren Holesh was the lone representative in the women's 5000 and represented the Tar Heels well as she finished third with a race of 17:01.01 en route to a new personal best.
In the field events on Friday, Norjai Palma tallied a throw of 45.30m (148-07) in the hammer throw en route to a 21st finish. Brian Doran turned in another 21st performance for the Heels as he tossed the javelin 48.02m (157-06).
The Carolina sprinters will be in action on Saturday when they compete at the Murray Neely Invitational hosted by NC A&T in Greensboro, while other Tar Heels will compete at Duke and Texas.
