Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The North Carolina volleyball team snapped a three match losing streak on Sunday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. as the Tar Heels took down Boston College, 3-0. The Tar Heels improve to 6-8 overall, 2-3 in ACC play and will take on Wake Forest at Carmichael Auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The Tar Heels took the opening game against the host Eagles by a 30-21 margin as Megan Owens and Lauren Prussing both connected on five kills. Carolina hit .208 in the opening frame as it held Boston College to a .064 hitting percentage on the back of three blocks. The Tar Heels started out quick in game one as they scored the first three points on an Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland kill, a Lauren Prussing service ace along with a Megan Owens kill.
The quick start led to a 15-8 lead midway through the game as Carolina cruised the rest of the way to the 30-21 win. The game one win was Carolina's first opening game win since its 3-0 sweep at NC State. Brianna Eskola was a key factor in BC's low hitting percentage as she dug out 14 balls for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels kept rolling in game two as they hit a match-high .283 en route to the 30-26 win. Carolina took a 3-0 lead once again as Heather Brooks picked up a kill and Stephanie Jansma tallied back-to-back aces for the early lead. The Eagles would not go so quietly in game as they battled back to take a 10-8 lead in the early portions of game two. Boston College would hold the lead until the Tar Heels would even the score at 17-17 and again at 18-18. Back-to-back errors by the Eagles and a Prussing kill forced BC into a timeout as the Tar Heels led 21-18. Carolina would outscore Boston College 9-8 the rest of the way for the 30-26 victory.
Looking for the 3-0 sweep Carolina found itself in an early hole in game three as the Eagles scored the first four points of the game. Carolina would not let game three slip away so easily though, outscoring Boston College 10-5 in the next 15 points to take a 10-9 lead. The Eagles would even the score at 11-11 before the Tar Heels used another 3-0 run to take a 14-11 lead and force a timeout. A very late rally by Boston College would not be enough as Carolina claimed game three 30-26 for the 3-0 sweep.
Carolina improves to 6-8 on the year and 2-3 in the ACC. A pair of Tar Heels tallied double-doubles in the victory as Prussing accounted for a team-high 13 kills and 12 digs. Setter Stephanie Jansma recorded her second consecutive double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs of her own. Christine Vaughen and Heather Brooks added eight kills apiece as Vaughen did not record an error and pitched in six blocks. The Tar Heels blocked 13 attempts in the win as they held Boston College to a .051 hitting percentage.
Carolina will host a pair of matches next week as Wake Forest will come into Carmichael Auditorium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before the Tar Heels take on Duke on Sunday at 2 p.m.
