PHILADELPHIA --- North Carolina only had four athletes in action Saturday at the Penn Relays, but all four turned in stellar performances for the Tar Heels on one of the sport's biggest stages. The highlight of the day for UNC came when senior Justin Ryncavage, the 2006 national champion in the javelin, claimed his second straight title in the college men's javelin throw championship at the legendary meet.
Ryncavage launched a 231-1 toss to take the event win, beating runner-up Matt Maloney from Tennessee by just more than two feet. Ryncavage also owns a Penn Relays title from his high school days. Sophomore Adam Montague also turned in an impressive outing in the event, throwing 224-9 to place fourth, giving Carolina two-top five finishers.
UNC also received two runner-up finishes on the day. Senior Nick Owens placed second in the championship division of the hammer throw for the second straight year, posting a 227-0 mark. Ashland's Kibwe Johnson threw 235-10 to claim the title.
Additionally, sophomore Brie Felnagle turned in a personal record 4:36.21 to finish second in the women's Olympic development mile. Making the day even sweeter for UNC was Tar Heel alumna Erin Donohue, who claimed the event win by edging Felnagle with a 4:35.70 time.
Carolina will be in action next weekend at the Orange and Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C., and at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
