No. 4 Carolina Falls To No. 20 Arizona State, 5-2

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 4 North Carolina lost the doubles point for the second straight match and fell to No. 20 Arizona State, 5-2, on a blustery Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels got singles wins from No. 4 Jenna Long and No. 68 Sanaz Marand but could not hold off the Sun Devils.
UNC (11-5) got off to a strong start in doubles with an 8-3 win from No. 17 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand at the No. 2 position over Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch. But the Sun Devils got wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions, including a marquee victory at the No. 1 position, as sixth-ranked Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke defeated ninth-ranked Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, 8-4.
Long, the No. 4 singles player in the nation, opened singles play with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 100 Capannolo. But the Sun Devils (7-3) got straight-set victories by Pooler at No. 5, Clarke at No. 3 and Rankin at No. 4 to clinch the win.
No. 68 Nadia Abdala added a victory over No. 79 Katrina Tsang before Marand defeated Laila Abdala in three sets at No. 6.
Next up for Carolina is an ACC contest with Virginia on March 9.
