CHAPEL HILL --- No. 10 North Carolina needed almost four hours, but the Tar Heels got past a gritty Virginia squad, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina rebounded from back-to-back losses by winning the doubles point in a sweep and scoring five singles victories over the No. 49 Cavaliers.
The Tar Heels, who had lost the doubles point in consecutive matches for the first time all season, changed up their lineup a bit Friday. No. 21 Cailtin Collins and Sanaz Marand moved up to the No. 1 position and defeated Maggie Yahner and Lara Alexander, 8-3. No. 29 Sara Anundsen and Katrina Tsang rolled to an 8-1 win over Brintney Larson and Caroline Hammond, while Jenna Long and Austin Smith topped Jennifer Stevens and Amanda Rales, 8-7 (5).
The singles action was intense on all courts, with each match taking at least 90 minutes. No. 40 Tsang opened the scoring with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Larson at the No. 2 position. No. 6 Long followed that with a stirring comeback at No. 1, rallying from a 6-0, 3-0 hole to win 0-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
With Carolina (12-5, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) ahead 3-0, Yahner got Virginia (6-4, 0-1 ACC) on the board with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Anundsen at No. 3.
No. 54 Smith then put the Tar Heels over the top with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Lindsey Pereira at No. 4. No. 69 Marand and Collins added three-set wins to push the final score to 6-1.
Carolina will depart Saturday for a spring break trip to Hawai'i. The Tar Heels will face the host Rainbow Wahine on Tuesday at 4 p.m. HST.
