Women’s Tennis Falls To No. 13 Virginia, 4-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – No. 5 University of North Carolina women's tennis wrapped up the weekend on the road against no. 13 Virginia in Charlottesville Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels and Cavaliers battled in a marathon match before Virginia eventually claimed the win, 4-3. The loss marks Carolina's first of the conference season and just second overall this year.
In doubles, UNC got off to a strong start winning each of the three matches. On court one, no. 6 Oby Kajuru and Susanna Maltby raced to a 6-2 win over the fourth-ranked pair from Virginia to start the match. Maddy Zampardo and Tatum Evans clinched the doubles point for Carolina with a 6-4 win on court three. No. 5 Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton earned another win for the Tar Heels as the team took a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
Virginia evened the score as Kaitlyn Rolls topped no. 7 Oby Kajuru on court three.
Maddy Zampardo continued to impress with a straight-set win in singles to give UNC the lead again at 2-1.
Once again, the Cavaliers tied the match after Theadora Rabman fell against her opponent from Virginia on court six.
No. 3 Reese Brantmeier started off strong in singles winning the first set, 6-1. The senior then dropped the second to force a deciding third set. Brantmeier dug deep to take the match while giving the Tar Heels an edge at 3-2.
No. 108 Anna Frey was in a battle from the first serve. The freshman worked to take the first set after winning the tie break, 10-8. She then fell in the second set as her and no. 108 Isabelle Lacy went to another tie breaker. In the third set, Frey fell 6-2 leaving the overall team scores knotted at 3-3.
No. 26 Tatum Evans found herself in a tight match going to three sets. The junior was eventually edged out by no. 32 Annabelle Xu in the third, 6-4.
