Tar Heels Shine In Throws At Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Nick Owens and Jocelyn White each picked up automatic qualifying marks for the NCAA Regional Championships in winning individual event titles as the North Carolina men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition Saturday at the Wake Forest Open. Owens posted a 221-9 mark in the men's hammer throw to claim the crown, while White used a 167-0 toss to take the women's discus.
Owens added to his impressive day in the men's discus as well, claiming second place with a 173-1 heave. As well, the mark gave him his second automatic qualifying standard of the day in the first outdoor meet of the season.
Junior Tyra Johnson had a standout day for the Tar Heels on the track, collecting two top-five finishes. Johnson's 11.80 clocking in the 100 meters gave her fourth place in the event, and she added a fifth-place showing in the 200 meters, recording a 24.15 time.
UNC received strong performances in two relays Saturday. The women's 4x100-meter relay team ran a 46.68 to finish third and the men's 4x400-meter relay team placed fourth in 3:14.75.
Carolina is next in action March 30-31 as it hosts the UNC Invitational.
