
No. 12 Carolina Gets Past No. 71 Maryland, 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The No. 10 North Carolina women's tennis team swept the doubles point and took five of six singles matches in scoring a 6-1 win over No. 71 Maryland Friday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. Jenna Long, Katrina Tsang, Cailtin Collins, Austin Smith and Sanaz Marand were each winners in singles play as the Tar Heels improved to 15-5, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
UNC dominated the doubles point for the fourth straight match, losing just eight games in three matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The Tar Heels got 8-1 victories at both No. 2 and No. 3 positions, with No. 49 Sara Anundsen and Tsang winning at No. 2 and Long and Laura Reichert triumphant at No. 3. No. 19 Collins and Marand completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
Carolina quickly clinched the match with three easy singles wins. No. 55 Tsang topped Michal Amir 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, No. 98 Smith defeated Maggie MacKeever 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and No. 51 Marand routed Masha Senic 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Long, the nation's No. 5 singles player, added a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win at No. 1 over No. 88 Marianne Baker, while Collins needed a third-set tiebreak to defeat Brooke Rogers 6-3, 4-6, (10-5).
Maryland fell to 7-7, 2-2 in the ACC with the loss.
Carolina continues its road trip with a Sunday afternoon match at Boston College.
