CLEMSON, S.C. - No. 9-ranked North Carolina (15-5, 2-2 ACC) equaled a season-high with four errors and left the bases loaded twice in a 7-3 loss to Clemson (8-8, 2-1 ACC) in the rubber game of an Atlantic Coast Conference series Sunday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Designated hitter Kris Harvey led the Tigers at plate for the second straight day with two hits and four runs batted in.
Harvey, who homered twice Saturday, drove in two runs with a fifth inning single and followed with a two-run double in the seventh after the Tar Heels had cut the lead to 5-3 to put the game away. With the win, the Tigers secured their fifth straight series win over Carolina, which has not taken a series at Clemson since the ACC went to its current three-game format in 1990.
Senior catcher Justin Webb went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, and senior second baseman Greg Mangum went 2-for-5 to lead the Tar Heel offense. Both teams had eight hits on the afternoon.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first, Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the third thanks to right fielder Seth Williams' fourth home run of the season. The solo shot to left was the first allowed this season by Clemson starter Robert Rohrbaugh and the first of the series for the Tar Heels.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Clemson first baseman Andy D'Alessio hit a three-run homer to right off UNC starter Adam Kalkhof in the bottom of the fourth. Right fielder Travis Storrer, who singled, and left fielder Tyler Colvin, who doubled down the right field line, both scored on D'Alessio's fourth home run of the season and the fourth of the series for the Tigers.
With sophomore righty Robert Woodard on for Kalkhof in the fifth, Clemson added two more runs on a bases-loaded chopper through the left side by Harvey. The single scored center fielder David Williams, who reached on an error to lead off the inning, and third baseman Herman Demmink, who walked.
Trailing 5-1 heading into the top of the seventh, the Tar Heels rallied to cut the four-run cushion in half. Shortstop Kyle Shelton started the rally with an infield single, and Mangum followed with a double to center of reliever Daniel Moskos, who came on for Rohrbaugh after Shelton's single. With runners on second and third, Webb singled through the left side for an RBI and his third hit of the afternoon. Designated hitter Matt Ellington then drove in Mangum with a sacrifice fly to left to cut the lead to 5-3.
Thanks to the two-run double from Harvey and the Tar Heels' fourth error of the day, the Tigers quickly got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning.
Kalkhof, who took the loss to fall to 2-1, went four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out two. Woodard entered to start the fifth and allowed four runs (two earned) in three innings, and closer Matt Danford fanned the side in the ninth.
Rohrbaugh (1-1) earned the win for Clemson with two runs on six hits over 6.1 innings. He walked one and struck out four.
The Tar Heels return to action for a two-game midweek series versus Towson. Games are set for 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium.
