NORFOLK, Va. -- The North Carolina field hockey team suffered its worst loss in two years on Saturday, falling 5-0 to host Old Dominion, a team the Tar Heels beat 1-0 earlier in the season. Fourth-ranked Carolina saw its record slump to 12-5 with the loss, UNC's third in the last four games. No. 7 Old Dominion improved to 14-5.
Senior Janelle Engle scored the only goal ODU would need on a penalty corner in the 12th minute of play. The Lady Monarchs then scored twice in the next four minutes, taking a 3-0 lead on unassisted goals by Dana Sensenig and Sami McLenegan.
Sensenig added another goal in the second half and sophomore Denise Admiraal had the fifth, making the score 5-0 in the 57th minute of play. The loss was UNC's worst since a 5-0 defeat at Duke during the 2003 season. The Tar Heels had been shut out just once since then, in a 2-0 loss at Wake Forest earlier this season.
ODU had 14 shots to UNC's eight (four in each half) and five corners to UNC's four (three in the first half). Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran played the first 59 minutes for UNC, making two saves and allowing five goals. Prior to Saturday's game, she had allowed just 12 goals all season, an average of 0.76 per game. Sophomore Marie Bounds played the final 11 minutes against the Lady Monarchs and had one save.
The Tar Heels have less than 24 hours to regroup before taking the field against another highly-ranked team. UNC hosts No. 6 Penn State (17-1) Sunday at noon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. (The game time was moved up an hour from an originally-scheduled 1 p.m. start due to Penn State travel constraints.) The Nittany Lions have won 17 games in a row since dropping the season opener at ODU.
Prior to the start of the game, UNC will celebrate Senior Day, honoring Tran and back Naomi Weatherald before their final appearance at Henry Stadium.
