CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Second-ranked North Carolina scored three second-half goals Sunday afternoon to defeat visiting William & Mary 3-0 in field hockey. The Tar Heels are now 11-0 (2-0 ACC) on the season, while the Tribe falls to 5-4.
Carolina had eight shots in the first half but couldn't get the ball in the goal until sophomore Rachel Dawson scored on a penalty corner, UNC's second of the half and sixth of the game, with 22:45 to play. Dawson took the pushout from sophomore Brooke Miller and fired a shot past Tribe goalkeeper Heather Kibbee, who had six saves on the day.
The Tar Heels' next goal came on a penalty stroke, UNC's first of the season, with 20:37 to play. Senior Kelsey Keeran converted to put her team up 2-0. Carolina was awarded another stroke with just over eight minutes to play, but back-up goalkeeper Gwendolyn Hunter saved Dawson's shot.
UNC's final goal came with just over two minutes remaining in the game when Keeran tipped in a shot by Miller from the left side of the goal.
The Tar Heels came into Sunday's game having already earned an important win on the weekend, and perhaps that game was still in the players' minds 24 hours later. Saturday afternoon, UNC beat No. 5 Duke 2-1 in Durham, N.C., picking up an Atlantic Coast Conference win and avenging two consecutive losses to the Blue Devils. "It's human nature to have a letdown after a game like that and we talked about that before today's game," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We wanted to play with the same level of intensity and energy today that we had yesterday and we didn't do that in the first half. But we played better in the second half and I hope we'll continue to learn and grow from weekends like this one."
Carolina gets just one day of rest before playing its third game in four days when Davidson visits for a Tuesday evening game.
