MADISON, Wis. - The No. 10 North Carolina women's tennis team beat No. 12 Harvard in the final consolation round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships held at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Harvard took the doubles point after winning all three close matchups. The Tar Heels came back to take four of the six singles points, with senior Kendrick Bunn's 7-5, 6-4 win over Cindy Chu clinching the match.
As the No. 6 seeded Bunn played her second and final set, it was the only match left on the court. At that point, Harvard and UNC were tied at three. Bunn's win was the deciding point.
No. 34 Aniela Mojzis, No. 65 Sara Anundsen, and Kendall Cline also won their singles matches to give Carolina the victory. At the No. 1 spot, Mojzis defeated Susanna Lingman in a marathon match, 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-4. Mojzis saved four match points in her second set to go on to win it in the tiebreak.
Freshman Sara Anundsen beat Melissa Andersen 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 seed. Anundsen went 3-0 during the tournament and never took a match to a third set.
Junior Kendall Cline defeated Harvard's Preethi Mukundan in a comeback effort, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Cline is coming off a win at the No. 4 seed after cruising past Wisconsin's Teresa Gonzaga, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, all three contests went the distance, with all matches including at least 14 games. At the No. 1 seed, the 41st-ranked junior duo of Mojzis and Cline fell just shy of beating No. 50 Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman, 8-7 (5).
Senior Lee Bairos and Bunn lost to Alexis Martire and Eva Wang of Harvard, 8-6, but went 2-1 during the tournament after taking wins over UCLA and Wisconsin. The freshmen pair of Anundsen and Caitlin Collins went 1-2 in doubles play in the tournament.
Carolina finished 2-1 at the National Indoor Championships, a tournament that features the top collegiate tennis teams in the country. The Tar Heels fell to UCLA 5-2 on Thursday and defeated Wisconsin 5-2 on Friday. They move to 5-1 on the season. Next up for the Tar Heels are two away matches: Kentucky on Feb. 14 and Tennessee on Feb. 15.
