Women's Tennis Beats Kentucky 6-1

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky. The Tar Heels, who moved up to No. 9 in the ITA rankings released on Tuesday, are now 6-1 on the spring season.
No. 34 Aniela Mojzis upset No. 23 Aibika Kalsarieva with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. This is the second time this season that Mojzis has defeated an opponent ranked higher in the national polls. Mojzis defeated No. 21 Alice Barnes of Stanford in the semifinals of the UNLV Invitational on Jan. 18. Mojzis moves to 9-3 on spring season play.
At the third seed, freshman Sara Anundsen, ranked No. 65 nationally, defeated Joelle Schwenk in a three-set match, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Kendall Cline, No. 98 Caitlin Collins, and Jenna Long were also victorious with two-set wins. Senior Lee Bairos fell to Kentucky's Sarah Foster in a close three-set match for the Tar Heel's only loss on the day.
In doubles play, all three Carolina teams grabbed victories, giving the Tar Heels one point for doubles play. At the No. 1 seed, the junior duo of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline defeated Kentucky's Joelle Schwenk and Aibika Kalsarieva, 8-6. Senior Lee Bairos and freshman Jenna Long defeated Kim Coventry and Lara Maurer, 8-6. The UNC freshmen pair of Sara Anundsen and Caitlin Collins cruised past Sarah Foster and Liis Sober, 8-3.
The Tar Heels travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on another SEC team. Carolina will play the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
