WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The top-ranked Tar Heel field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling 4-3 in overtime to No. 2 Wake Forest at Kentner Stadium. The matchup between the nation's top two teams was the second in just over a week, following UNC's 3-2 win in penalty strokes on Oct. 2. Carolina is now 14-1 on the season and Wake Forest is 12-2. Sunday's game did not count in the ACC standings, in which UNC remains 3-0 and Wake 1-2.
Unlike the previous meeting, when Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the game in Chapel Hill, UNC scored first on Sunday. Sophomore Rachel Dawson registered her seventh goal of the season on a penalty corner just under 20 minutes into the game. Senior Laura Douglas and sophomore Brooke Miller assisted on the play.
Wake Forest answered with two goals, by Claire Laubach and Kelly Dostal, to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, UNC reclaimed the advantage with back-to-back goals in a span of just over three minutes. With 21:35 left to play, senior Kerry Falgowski scored to tie the game. At the 18:33 mark, junior Karen Mann registered her ninth goal of the year to put the Tar Heels up by one. Wake's game-tying goal by Haley Scott came with 13:40 to play.
In the seven-on-seven overtime, UNC managed three shots and Wake Forest six before the Demon Deacons drew the only penalty corner of the extra period. With 5:22 remaining, Maeke Boreel scored to give the hosts the win.
UNC had 19 shots in the game, 11 of them in the second period, to 21 by Wake Forest. The teams had eight penalty corners each. Goalkeeper Katy Tran made seven saves for UNC.
Sunday's game was the first in a five-game road stretch that will end the regular season for the Tar Heels. Next up is a trip to the state of Virginia, with games on Saturday at James Madison and next Sunday at Virginia.
