WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In a battle of the nation's top field hockey teams, No. 1 Wake Forest defeated No. 2 North Carolina 2-1 in overtime Friday afternoon at the Demon Deacons' Kentner Stadium.Wake improved to 8-0 (2-0 ACC) with the win, while UNC fell to 9-1 (0-1).
Senior Kelly Doton scored the winning goal for Wake Forest with 5:29 remaining in the first overtime period. The victory was the 27th in a row for the defending NCAA champions, who haven't lost a home game since UNC won in Winston-Salem on Oct. 10, 2000.
Wake Forest got on the board first when junior Claire Laubach scored with 5:37 to play before halftime on a penalty stroke. The Deacons held on to the 1-0 lead until North Carolina sophomore Karen Mann scored with 7:00 remaining in regulation to knot the score at 1-1. Junior Kerry Falgowski assisted on the play.
"We give Wake Forest credit - they outplayed us," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I thought we might be able to steal one, but they were too good today.
"I think this game was an eye-opener, and obviously motivating for us. Wins have been coming easy and scoring has been coming easy, but today we faced a very strong team and we struggled. A bright spot is that our defense didn't give up a goal in regulation, with their only goal coming on a penalty stroke. That speaks well for our defense and the way we played against such a good offensive team."
Next up for the Tar Heels is a home game against Duke. The Blue Devils come to Henry Stadium on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
