CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Second-ranked North Carolina defeated fourth-ranked Duke 4-1 Friday evening in an Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey game at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC improved to 9-1 (1-1 ACC) with the win, while Duke fell to 8-2 (0-2).
"I'm delighted with the win," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I thought the team played hard and tough. I'm proud of them."
The first half was scoreless, despite 13 shots by UNC. The Tar Heels finally got on the board 10 minutes into the second half when sophomore Karen Mann put back a shot that had rebounded off the pads of Duke goalkeeper Christy Morgan on a penalty corner. Less than a minute later, Carolina got its second goal, this one from junior Kelsey Keeran, who scored at close range from the right side of the goal.
Duke then scored its only goal of the evening on a penalty corner, its second of the half. Junior Gracie Sorbello had the shot, assisted by Johanna Bischof. Twenty seconds later, UNC responded with another goal, an unassisted shot by junior Laura Douglas.
Carolina's final goal came with 4:25 to play on junior Carey Fetting-Smith's straight shot on a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by Douglas and junior Katy Potter and gave UNC scores on two of its three penalty corner attempts in the second half.
The game was played in front of a crowd of 924, UNC's largest of the season at home. "It was exciting for the players to have that kind of a crowd," Shelton said. "It's fun to be a student-athlete at UNC and have the student body come out and support you like that. It made us all feel really good."
The win earned the Tar Heels a point in the Carlyle Cup battle, the annual all-sports contest betwen UNC and Duke.
UNC returns to action Sunday, hosting No. 8 Penn State at Henry Stadium at 1 p.m.
