CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team earned its fifth shutout of the season with a 10-0 win over Miami (Ohio) Tuesday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels improved to 9-0 with their third victory in the last four days, while the RedHawks fell to 1-5.
Juniors Carey Fetting-Smith and Kelsey Keeran both finished the day with hat tricks, and freshman Rachel Dawson scored twice. The team's other two goals came from juniors Kerry Falgowski and Laura Douglas.
Carolina broke the game open early, with three goals in the first 15 minutes of play and eight in the first half. UNC's first score came from Keeran, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, on an assist from freshman Laree Beans with 28:33 remaining in the first half. The next goal was also Keeran's, on a rebound off a save following a penalty corner shot. Dawson scored with 20:52 to play in the half, on a penalty corner direct shot, assisted by Douglas and Katy Potter.
Falgowski then scored from the field, assisted by Keeran, before Fetting-Smith put in her first goal, on a penalty corner. Dawson added another penalty corner goal, and Douglas and Fetting-Smith scored from the field to put UNC up 8-0 at the half.
Both the Tar Heels' second half scores, by Keeran and Fetting-Smith, were unassisted goals from the field.
Carolina outshot Miami 35-1 and had 11 corners to none by the RedHawks. Miami goalkeeper Kerri Matthews made 14 saves.
UNC returns to action on Friday, travelling to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on top-ranked Wake Forest, the defending national champion. The 4 p.m. game at Kentner Stadium is the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for the Tar Heels.
