DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomores Lori Chalupny and Lindsay Tarpley both tallied their seventh goals of the season Sunday afternoon as No. 1 North Carolina overcame a sluggish start to defeat Richmond 2-0 in the final match of the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium. For Chalupny, it was her fourth game-winning goal of the season as UNC improved to 9-0 while the Spiders fell to 1-4-1.
The Tar Heels struggled offensively in the first half of play and took only five shots, three of which came in the final five minutes of the half. Carolina picked up the pace in the second half, however. After the Spiders took the first shot of the second half, the Tar heels fired the last 23 shots of the game and finally found the back of the net twice.
The game-winner came off the foot of Chalupny in the 69th minute. After midfielder Kacey White chased down a ball in the far right corner she dribbled toward the box and fed striker Heather O'Reilly. With her back to the goal, O'Reilly held off her defender and slotted the ball back to Chalupny who rocketed a bullet into the left corner from 16 yards away.
UNC added an insurance goal at 84:24. Defender Sara Randolph served a ball from the area deep into Richmond territory. Midfielder Kendall Fletcher ran on the ball in the Spiders' penalty area and she headed the ball toward the middle of the box where the onrushing Tarpley ran onto the ball and headed it into the upper left.
For the match UNC had 28 shots to four for Richmond. Richmond goalkeeper Megan Cox turned in a yeoman's effort as she made 12 saves. UNC's Aly Winget posted her sixth solo shutout of the 2003 campaign.
Carolina returns to the pitch next Friday when it plays in a tournament at the Naval Academy. Carolina meets Navy Friday at 7 p.m. and Villanova Sunday at 3 p.m.
