Sept. 26, 2003
ANNAPOLIS, MD. - efore the largest crowd to ever witness a regular-season women's soccer match in NCAA history, No. 1 North Carolina got a late goal to beat Navy 1-0 and snap a 34-match regular season unbeaten streak the Mids put on the line against the Tar Heels Friday night. Senior captain Jordan Walker scored the winning goal for UNC in the 73rd minute as for the second straight match Carolina launched a slew of shots only to have trouble finishing its opportunities.
The crowd of 6,527 at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium broke the old regular season record of 6,070 set at a 1999 match between Syracuse and Connecticut. The Navy Drum and Bugle Corps kept up a steady din during the match and gave the Midshipmen a pronounced home field advantage.
UNC (10-0-0) improved to 4-0 in matches decided by one goal this season. That includes three overtime wins. Navy dropped to 7-1-1. Navy had not lost a regular season match since October 14, 2001 when Villanova defeated the Mids 4-0 at Villanova, Pa. The Navy streak started on October 19, 2001 at Colgate, a 2-1 Navy win. Beginning with that match Navy was 28-0-6 in the regular season heading into Friday's match.
Carolina's goal came from senior captain Jordan Walker, assisted by sophomore Lori Chalupny. Chalupny sent a pass from the right side of the box which appeared to be going wide before Walker one-timed the ball over the shoulder of Navy goalkeeper Kim Bonafede, who had four saves. UNC outshot Navy 17-4. Aly Winget made three saves for Carolina and now has seven solo shutouts on the season. Friday night's match was a contest between two great defensive teams. Navy has allowed only eight goals in nine matches this season and Carolina has allowed only three goals in 10 matches, one on a penalty kick.
Carolina will look to lift its offense to another level Sunday against Villanova at 3 p.m. in a match also played in Annapolis. UNC has taken 45 shots in the last two matches but scored only three goals. That was after a five-goal performance on only 11 shots against No. 3 UCLA on September 19.
North Carolina 0 1 - 1
Navy 0 0 - 0
