Carolina Earns 6-0 Win At Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshmen Laree Beans and Rachel Dawson led the second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team to a 6-0 win over host Davidson Wednesday evening. Beans and Dawson scored two goals each, and the Tar Heels got one each from juniors Carey Fetting-Smith and Amber Chambers to improve to 5-0 on the season. The game was the first between UNC and the Wildcats (0-4) since 1979.
Beans, a forward from Bethlehem, Pa., scored the first two goals, both within a 17-second span less than five minutes into the game.The first was assisted by junior Kelsey Keeran and the second by junior Laura Douglas. Dawson, a midfielder from Berlin, N.J., scored her first with 21 minutes to play before halftime on an assist by Miller.
In the second half, Fetting-Smith opened with a penalty corner goal, assisted by Douglas and junior Katy Potter. Less than a minute later, Chambers put in her first goal of the season, assisted by Miller. Beans assisted on Dawson's final goal.
UNC outshot the Wildcats 22-3 and had 10 penalty corners to Davidson's two. Tar Heel goalkeeper Katy Tran made two saves and earned her third shutout of the season.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday with the first home game of the season. The Tar Heels host James Madison at Henry Stadium at 1 p.m.
