North Carolina (7-2) defeated Davidson (3-3), 13-1 Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels got solid pitching and the offense exploded for 13 runs on 16 hits while Sammy Hewitt contributed with two home runs as 22nd ranked Carolina remained undefeated at home this season.
Freshman Adam Kalkhof worked five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five Wildcat batters. This outing earned Kalkhof his second win of the season.
Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Hewitt led off with a tape measure home run to center field, his second of the season. Designated hitter Zack Zuercher followed with a single and later came around to score on a sharp single to center by Ryan Blake.
Matt Danford entered the game in the sixth inning in relief of Kalkhof for the Tar Heels and allowed Davidson their first run of the day. Danford walked D.J. Dailey to lead off the inning and Dailey later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Chris Emond, making the score 2-1.
The Tar Heels extended their lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Blake picked up his second hit of the day, a double into left-center field. Then with two outs, Chad Prosser lined a single over the shortstop's head which scored Blake. Prosser plated Carolina's fourth run when he scored on Jeremy Cleveland's RBI single to left.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hewitt again led off and blasted his second home run of the game, giving him three on the season. After a double and a walk, Blake again doubled, driving in his second and third runs of the game. A triple down the right field line by Prosser scored Blake with one out. The Tar Heels would add two more runs and led 10-1 after seven.
The Tar Heels tacked on three more runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth and put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.
