CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-North Carolina scored six runs in the fourth and two in the fifth en route to an 8-2 victory over Le Moyne in Boshamer Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Eight timely hits by the Tar Heels and five Dolphin errors kept Carolina a perfect 6-0 at home in 2003.
The Tar Heels were led by starting pitching Garry Bakker and two RBIs each by Mike Daniel and Ryan Blake.
akker gave up one earned run on five hits and struck out five to pick up his second win of the season. After retiring the side in order in the first, third and fourth, he worked out of jams with runners on second and third with less than two outs without allowing a run in the fifth and sixth.
"My mentality is to just go after them," Bakker said of working with runners on base. "With a defense like we have which was evident with Sammy Hewitt and Ryan Blake making some good plays, you just throw strikes. If they put the ball in play, you are going to get out of it."
After being retired in order by Bakker in the first, the Dolphins drew first blood with one run on two hits in the second. Mike Pecchia led of with a single to right and advanced to second with Bryan Frisbee drew a walk. A double to right-center by Jeff Justice plated Pecchia to put Le Moyne up 1-0.
Le Moyne starter Nick Marascia held Carolina without a run or hit in the first three innings, but five hits and one error led to six Tar Heel runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jeremy Cleveland and Sean Farrell singled to lead off the inning and were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Sammy Hewitt. Cleveland scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Chris Iannetta.
With two outs, Greg Mangum reached on an error and later scored along with Farrell on a triple over the right fielder's head by Blake. Blair Waggett doubled home Blake and Prosser walked. Both Waggett and Prosser scored on a single by Daniel as the Tar Heels plated five unearned runs.
In the top of the fifth, Bakker worked out of a jam with runners on second and third with only one out with a strikeout and then getting Kyle Brown to fly out to Daniel in right.
Carolina tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Farrell walked and stole second. Hewitt singled to left, driving in Farrell and advanced to second when the left fielder bobbled the ball. Hewitt scored on a pinch-hit single by Adam Weaver for an 8-1 Tar Heel lead.
akker worked out of another jam in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third and no outs. Le Moyne's Frisbee grounded out to first, and Blake ran down Pecchia who was caught between second and third. Bakker then got Justice to ground to third ending the threat.
Kevin Brower and Michael Gross each pitched a perfect inning of relief in the seventh and eighth, and Zack Zuercher gave up a home run to Frisbee in the top of the ninth before closing out the game.
The Tar Heels take on Davidson tomorrow at 3 p.m.
