COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 16th-ranked Ohio State (7-1) women's lacrosse team made history tonight in a 10-8 upset of ninth-ranked North Carolina (3-5) in the ig Ten/ACC Challenge played at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The win was the seventh consecutive win for the Buckeyes this season, besting the previous mark of six set at the beginning of last season. It was also OSU's first victory over the Tar Heels in six meetings. The win, in fact, avenged a 12-7 loss to North Carolina that ended OSU's winning streak last year.
OSU's Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) powered the Buckeye offense with four goals with Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malven, Pa.) and Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) adding two each. North Carolina's Beth Ames and Brooke Young paced the Tar Heels with two goals each.
Ohio State opened the scoring with goals by Oliver (2:19) and Wilson (4:09) for a 2-0 lead. North Carolina, with goals by Melissa McCarthy (9:05) and Allison Higgins (10:45) tied the game at two. Buckeye Weatherill scored (15:43) but was offset by a Young goal at 17:50. Tied at three, OSU's Wilson scored twice at 18:12 and 22:26 to give Ohio State a 5-3 lead at halftime.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the second half with a Weatherill goal at 31:30 to take a 6-3 lead. North Carolina cut the margin to two (6-4) with a goal by Brooke Dieringer at 34:59. OSU's Wilson picked up her fourth goals at 36:33 on a free position attempt to give OSU a 7-4 lead. The Tar Heels responded with a Stephanie Scurachio goal at 39:53 to close the gap to 7-5. In a period of three minutes and 13 seconds, Ohio State opened a 10-5 lead over North Carolina. Oliver scored her second goal of the game at 41:33. Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) scored what would be the game winner at 42:04 and KC Carter (Fr., Birchrunville, Pa.) completed the Buckeye scoring at 44:46 for a 10-5 lead. North Carolina responded with a three-goal run starting with a Beth Ames score at 47:51. Youngs's second goal came at 53:27 and Ames scored again at 54:30 to trail by only two at 10-8. After an Ohio State time out, the Buckeyes held off the Tar Heels to capture the win.
In goal for North Carolina, Katelyn Hoffman had nine saves for the Tar Heels while OSU's Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) had 11 saves in her seventh win of the season.
The Challenge continues Sunday when North Carolina will face 11th-ranked Penn State at noon. The Nittany Lions fell to No. 2 Maryland, 11-10 in Friday's first game. Ohio State will face the Terrapins in the final game of the Challenge at 2 p.m.
