erkeley, Calif. ----- The 12th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team lost a hard-fought match on Thursday to No. 4 California, 4-3, at the Hellman Tennis Courts.
The victory extended the Golden Bears' win streak to five and ended the Tar Heels streak at three.
In doubles action the 11th-ranked duo of Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano posted their fourth consecutive victory with an 8-2 decision over the 42nd ranked pair of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline.
On No. 3, Marlene Mejia and Lee Bairos defeated Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch 8-4 to even the match. However, on court two, UNC's No. 23-ranked doubles tandem of Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn fell to Cal's Jacobs and Scheldt. The match was tied at 5-5, but Cal pulled away to claim the doubles point with an 8-5 victory.
In the top singles slot, Cal's No. 10 Kops-Jones pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over No. 11 Pinchbeck. On court No. 2, UNC's Mejia defeated Fusano, 7-6, 6-3, and on No. 3, No. 67 Mojzis ended Lynch's three-match winning streak with a hard-fought 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win to tie the match at 2-2.
In the No. 4 singles, Cline fell to Jacobs, 6-0, 6-1 and in No. 5 singles, Havlicek defeated Lee Bairos 7-5, 7-5.
UNC grabbed its third point of the match on court No. 6 as Kendrick Bunn handed Borisoff her eighth loss of the year in a 3-6 rain-shortened win.
