CHAPEL HILL - In a hard-fought 6-1 loss to Duke University on Thursday night, Tar Heel sophomores Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline paired up at flight one doubles to defeat the No. 2 nationally ranked doubles team of Julie DeRoo and Amanda Johnson.
Mojzis and Cline, nationally ranked at No. 42, defeated DeRoo and Johnson 8-6. "I didn't even know they were ranked No. 2 until after the match," said Mojzis. "It was probably better that way."
At flight two, the No. 23 doubles team of Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn battled Duke's No. 10 pair of Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams, but lost 9-8(7-5) in a nailbiting tiebreaker.
"Our doubles play tonight was much better than the last time we played Duke," said Coach Jen Callen. "We had our chances to win the doubles point, and I was very pleased with how hard we fought."
In singles competition, Mojzis won the Tar Heels' only point of the match. The No. 67 sophomore from Cape Town, South Africa upset Duke's No. 57 Julie Smith 6-1, 7-5 at flight three.
At flight one, No. 11 Pinchbeck played extremely well for the Tar Heels, and fought hard through another tiebreaking match. She was defeated by No. 2 Kelly McCain 4-6, 7-5 (10-3). McCain is yet to be defeated in a dual match this year.
"I give Duke a lot of credit," said Callen. "They played consistent throughout all of their doubles matches and have depth in singles."
The Blue Devils receive 1.5 points towards the Carlyle Cup competition for the win. The Carlyle Cup is a competition between Duke and North Carolina sponsored by Carlyle & Company. Duke now leads 18.5 to 15.5.
The Tar Heels will play host to No. 10 Tennessee Saturday, March 22 at noon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
