Balanced Scoring Leads Tar Heels Past High Point In NCAA First Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina got goals from seven different players and assists from 10 different players to power past High Point 8-0 in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament before 1,038 fans at Fetzer Field. UNC advances to the second round to play UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
After scoring three early goals, UNC Coach Anson Dorrance emptied his bench just 21 minutes into the match and played reserves the rest of the match. Carolina finished with a 41-1 edge in shots and a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Corinne Black had two goals and one assist got UNC and other multiple point scorers were Lindsay Tarpley with one goal and one assist, Anne Morrell with one goal and one assist, Kacey White with two assists and Mary McDowell with two assists. UNC has now had 18 different players score goals this season and 23 different players record points.
UNC scored twice in the first eight minutes. At 4:46, Maggie Tomecka scored her fifth goal of the year on a rebound of a shot by Catherine Reddick. Then at 7:59, Lindsay Tarpley tallied her 20th goal of the season off an assist by Kendall Fletcher. Tarpley became the first UNC player to score 20 goals in a season since Meredith Florance had 20 in 2000.
Heather O'Reilly scored her ninth goal of the campaign in the 14th minute before the subs came in for Carolina. Before the end of the first half, UNC scored twice more on Leigh Blomgren's second goal and Sara Randolph first goal of the campaign.
Leading 5-0 at the half, UNC struck for two more goals in the first six minutes of the second half as Black scored her first goal of the season followed quickly by Morrell's sixth tally. In the 85th minute the Heels finished up the scoring on Black's second goal of the match off a nifty assist by White.
Friday night's meeting was the first between UNC and High Point and the Panthers' first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
