Tar Heels Advance To NCAA Third Round With 5-0 Win Over UNCG

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-ranked North Carolina's Lindsay Tarpley tied an NCAA Tournament record for assist in a match and became only the third UNC player in history to record 20 goals and 20 assists in a season as the Tar Heels defeated UNC Greensboro 5-0 Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament second round before 1,110 at Fetzer Field. Carolina will host a third round NCAA Tournament match Friday at 6 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Tarpley assisted on UNC's first four goals to tie the Tournament record of four set by Cindy Parlow of UNC against Wake Forest in 1997 and equalled by the Tar Heels' Jena Kluegel against Wake Forest in 2000. Tarpley now has 20 goals and 20 assists this year. The only other Tar Heels to have a 20-20 season were Mia Hamm(32-33) in 1992 and Robin Confer (20-22) in 1997.
The Tar Heels pounced on the Spartans early with a goal only 2:59 into the match by Lori Chalupny. Alyssa Ramsey started the sequence with a pass to Tarpley who sloted the ball back to Chalupny for a one-timer from 12 yards away.
It took less than 13 minutes for UNC to add to its lead as Heather O'Reilly and Lindsay Tarpley played give-and-go with O'Reilly finishing for her 10th goal on another one-timer. At 23:07, Ramsey scored her eighth goal of the campaign with a low shot into the left corner from a difficult angle with Tarpley's third assist of the match.
After leading 3-0 at halftime, Carolina made it 4-0 in the 52nd minute as O'Reilly scored her second goal of the match off a tap back by Anne Morrell. Tarpley fed Morrell in the box from the left side to help create the goal.
UNC finished the scoring in the 88th minute on Elizabeth Guess' unassisted goal, her seventh of the season.
Jennifer Stillman made several top notch saves for the Spartans, finishing with seven on the day. Carolina also had two shots hit the crossbar and four shots hit posts. The shot differential was 28-3 in UNC's favor while corner kicks were 10-1.
