COLLEGE PARK, MD. - ehind a two-goal performance by sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley and sophomore goalkeeper Aly Winget's 10th solo shutout of the campaign, the No. 1 North Carolina women's soccer team whitewashed No. 22 Maryland 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field to improve to 13-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terrapins fell to 6-4-1 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC.
Tarpley scored one goal in each half of the match and has five for the week. She scored three in UNC's 4-0 win over Duke last Wednesday in Durham, N.C. and notched the game-winner in both ACC matches for the Tar Heels this week. Meanwhile, the Tar Heel defense did its part as Carolina posted its 11th shutout of the season in 13 matches. Winget has played the whole way in 10 of those shutouts. She had six saves in the win Sunday while Kristen Barnhill had 10 saves for the Terrapins to keep the score from being more lopsided.
Tarpley scored the eventual game-winner in just the seventh minute of the match as she finished into the top left corner after taking a pass from senior midfielder Jordan Walker. It was Tarpley's 11th goal of the campaign. Carolina added to its lead at the 21:23 mark as freshman forward Heather O'Reilly scored her third goal of the season off an assist by senior forward Alyssa Ramsey. Ramsey crossed the ball from the left post to the middle of the box where O'Reilly slotted the ball past Barnhill.
UNC's advantage became 3-0 at the 56:10 mark as the Tar Heels benefitted from an own goal by the Terps who headed in an Alyssa Ramsey corner kick. Just over two minutes later the score became 4-0 as Tarpley scored her second goal of the match and 12th of the season tapping in a ball after it was misplayed by a Terrapin defender.
UNC outshot the Terps 27-8 on the match while UNC had seven corner kicks and the Terps had three. Carolina returns to the pitch on Friday when the Tar Heels host NC State at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. Four of Carolina's last five regular-season matches will be played in Chapel Hill, all against ACC teams.
