CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina No. 1 women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season as Lindsay Tarpley scored her 13th goal and Kacey White had the first multi-goal game of her career in a 4-1 victory over NC State at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels improved to 14-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack, which became the first team to score on UNC in over 579 minutes, fell to 7-5-1 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
UNC dominated the game statistically with 28 shots to only three for the Wolfpack and 14 corner kicks to two for NC State. But freshman goalkeeper Megan Connors made a career-high 10 saves. Despite outshooting the Wolfpack 16-1 in the first half it took over 32 minutes for the Tar Heels to get on the scoreboard. The goal came at 32:36 as Tarpley back heeled a pass from Mary McDowell into the goal. UNC's Kacey White had a point blank shot that was headed off the line by NC State's Megan Buescher. McDowell headed Buescher's clearance to Tarpley who finished between a pair of Wolfpack defenders.
UNC added to its lead a little over seven minutes into the second half as freshman Jessica Maxwell scored her first career goal and it turned out to be the eventual game-winner. Alyssa Ramsey served a corner kick into the box where Maggie Tomecka headed the ball on to Maxwell whose header went over Connors into the goal.
Then White, who entered the game with four career goals, took over. At 70:49 she scored her second goal of the season, taking a pass from Tarpley and launching a shot that deflected off a Wolfpack defender into the goal. Less than 10 minutes later, White scored again as she took a cross from the left side by McDowell, settled the ball and slotted it past Connors into the lower right corner.
NC State broke through on a goal by Adrienne Barnes off a corner kick by Anna Helenius at the 85:22 mark. The goal was the first allowed by UNC's Aly Winget in 579:41. That was the second long shutout streak in goal this season for Winget. Earlier, she had a streak of 396:13 without allowing a goal until UCLA scored twice against her on September 19.
UNC will return to the pitch on Tuesday when it plays host to Wake Forest at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. That will mark the return of All-America defender Catherine Reddick and assistant coach Bill Palladino to the UNC team after their service with the U.S. Women's World Cup Team ends Saturday.
