CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--With an 8-0 win over visiting Richmond Sunday afternoon, the University of North Carolina field hockey team completed the weekend with 13 goals scored and none surrendered in a pair of victories at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels, now 8-2 (1-0 ACC), shut out tenth-ranked Duke 5-0 on Saturday.
"This was a very good weekend for us," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We had been struggling and made some corrections, and the team has responded well. We've shored up our defense and are showing more energy on our attack."
Senior Abby Martin missed out on putting UNC on the scoreboard when her penalty stroke hit the top of the goal with 24:37 remaining in the first half. Just over a minute later, however, she got one in on an assist from freshman Carey Fetting-Smith to give UNC the only goal it would need. Martin, who scored UNC's second goal 15 minutes later on a penalty corner, now has 112 career points, tied for eighth with Laurel Hershey on UNC's alltime scoring list.
Senior Abbey Woolley also had a pair of goals on Sunday and added an assist for a five-point game. Junior Meredith Keller scored a goal and chipped in two assists. Freshmen Fetting-Smith, Kerry Falgowski and Charlotte Plugge also scored goals, while Kelsey Keeran and Amber Chambers added assists.
Carolina's next game is on Saturday, when the Tar Heels travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons defeated UNC 2-0 in Chapel Hill on Sept. 26 in a non-conference contest. Saturday's game is the one that will count toward the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
Richmond (5-4) hosts American on Wednesday.
