CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The eighth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team came away from Francis E. Henry Stadium Wednesday evening with a 2-0 shutout win against second-ranked North Carolina (6-2). The Demon Deacons (5-3) scored a goal in each half to earn the victory, which does not count toward the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The teams will meet on Oct. 6 in Winston-Salem, N.C., for this year's conference contest.
Junior Maria Whitehead scored the game-winner 10 minutes into the action on the rebound of a save by UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran. Wake's second goal game with 26:46 remaining in the game when junior Heather Aughinbaugh tapped in the rebound of another Demon Deacon shot. For the game, Wake Forest had 10 shots on goal to UNC's eight.
"We got beat at our own game," said UNC associate head coach Nick Conway. "Wake Forest is a very good team. They play the same game we do and they were better at it tonight."
UNC head coach Karen Shelton did not attend the game. Her mother, Judy, passed away on Sept. 7 at the age of 72 and was buried Wednesday afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery. The funeral had been scheduled for Sept. 12, but was postponed following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Shelton will rejoin the team for Thursday afternoon's practice.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday when they host Duke at 1 p.m. in the ACC opener for both teams. The game also will count toward the standings for the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools.
Carolina plays at home again on Sunday, hosting Richmond at 1 p.m.
