CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Coming off a loss and determined to play with the emotion it had been lacking, the University of North Carolina field hockey team shut out visiting Duke 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels improved to 7-2 (1-0 ACC) while the 10th-ranked Blue Devils fell to 5-3 (0-1 ACC).
UNC was held scoreless in its last outing, a 2-0 non-conference loss to Wake Forest on Wednesday, but didn't take long to get on the board against Duke. With 16:01 remaining in the first half, freshman Kerry Falgowski scored what would prove to be the game-winner, on an assist from senior Abby Martin. Falgowski, who came off the bench to play at forward, also scored Carolina's fifth goal of the game.
The Tar Heels led just 1-0 at halftime after three shots on goal by each team, but dominated offensively in the second half, with 11 shots and four goals to just one shot for Duke. Carolina started the barrage just over a minute into the second half with a goal by freshman forward Kelsey Keeran. "I thought we played really well in the first half," Duke coach Liz Tchou said.
"That first goal in the second half killed us. The momentum shifted their way." With 15:51 remaining in the game, UNC stretched its lead to 3-0 on a penalty corner goal by Martin. A senior back, Martin now has seven goals on the season and shares the team lead with senior forward Abbey Woolley, whose unassisted goal put UNC up 4-0 with 13:56 to play. Falgowski's second goal came with 6:59 remaining in the game and gave her four for the season.
"We played with a lot of emotion and fire today," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "People were diving on the ground and going after balls. We had been looking flat, but not today.
"The team recognizes the fact that we haven't been playing to our potential. It has been clearly demonstrated to them that they need to play hard all the time, not only game to game but play to play."
The matchup opened competition for the Carlyle Cup, a year-long all-sports battle between Carolina and Duke. The field hockey team's win earned the Tar Heels 1.5 points and the lead heading into tonight's men's soccer game. It also opened ACC play for both teams and lengthened Carolina's field hockey winning streak against the Blue Devils to 45 consecutive games.
UNC is back in action on Sunday, hosting Richmond at 1 p.m. The Spiders, 5-3, are coming off a 3-2 loss to James Madison on Friday and were in the stands for Saturday's UNC-Duke game. "We need to be prepared for Richmond and play as hard as we did today," Shelton said.
Duke hosts Appalachian State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
