UNC Field Hockey Falls To Maryland In OT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Maryland junior Carissa Messimer scored in overtime Saturday afternoon to give the No. 2 Terrapins a 1-0 win over the North Carolina field hockey team at Francis E. Henry Stadiu. Maryland improved to 12-3 on the season and moved to the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings at 3-1. North Carolina, ranked fifth in the nation, fell to 11-4, 2-2 in the ACC.
Although Maryland outshot UNC 19-6 in regulation, the score remained knotted at 0-0 after 70 minutes of play. The Terrapins' goal came with 7:34 remaining in the 15-minute sudden-death overtime, after a failed penalty corner attempt. Senior Rachel Hiskins assisted on the goal.
The game was the sixth overtime contest in the past eight meetings between Maryland and UNC. "I thought it was good for our team to play a team like Maryland," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They play at a speed we're not accustomed to. Maryland is the team to beat for the national championship, and I think we'll grow from a game like this.
"They outplayed us at times today, but I though we played some great circle defense and I'm proud of my team for that.
Less than 24 hours after the completion of Saturday's game, UNC will return to action with a 1 p.m. game at Duke on Sunday. The matchup will not count toward the ACC standings, but is good for 1.5 points in the Carlyle Cup race, the all-sports competition between the two schools.
"We like to look at a weekend like this as preparation for the postseason," Shelton said. "It's good practice to play back-to-back games like this, good for our fitness and good for our mental toughness."
This will be the second meeting of the season between UNC and Duke (9-5, 0-2 ACC). On Sept. 29 at Henry Stadium, Carolina defeated the Blue Devils 5-0 in the season's ACC matchup.
"Duke is a very good team and vastly improved from the first time we played," Shelton said. "They'll be hungry to play us. We'll have a very tough game tomorrow."
