DURHAM, N.C.-Freshman Kerry Falgowski scored all three goals Sunday afternoon as the University of North Carolina field hockey team defeated Duke 3-1 in a non-conference contest. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels are now 12-4 on the season, while the 14th-ranked Blue Devils are 9-6 .
The UNC win earned the Tar Heels 1.5 points in the race for the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between Duke and Carolina.
Falgowski entered the game third on the UNC team in goals scored this season, but came out of it tied for the team lead with seniors Abby Martin and Abbey Woolley. All three have scored 11 goals this season. Five of Falgowski's have come against Duke-she had two in UNC's 5-0 win over the Blue Devils on Sept. 29. Sunday's output marked the first hat trick of her collegiate career and the first this year by a UNC player.
"For a freshman to have a hat trick against an ACC team is great for her and important for her development," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I think Kerry was disappointed with the game she had yesterday against Maryland and she responded today. She had a lot of help from her teammates, but she was the one who put the ball in the net."
Carolina got on the board less than 10 minutes into the game, when Falgowski scored on a pass from classmate Kelsey Keeran. Duke evened the score with 9:34 remaining in the half when freshman Johanna Bischof put back the rebound from another Duke shot.
Falgowski's second goal game with 20:40 left in the game when she dove to deflect a pass by Charlotte Plugge, another freshman, past Duke goalkeeper Hallie Smith. Just over three minutes later, on a penalty corner, Falgowski tipped in a shot by Martin, who leads the team in assists this season with 10.
Duke had several opportunities to chip into the North Carolina lead, including a penalty shot by Angie North that sailed to the left of the net with ten minutes remaining in the game.
The game marked the 46th consecutive time that UNC has defeated Duke in field hockey.
"Duke is a very good team," Shelton said. "They're skilled and well-coached. This was not an easy victory. Our team earned it, and we earned it in the second half."
UNC returns to action on Thursday, hosting Virginia at 4 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The non-conference game was originally scheduled for Sept. 16, but was postponed following the events of Sept. 11. After that, Carolina travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion on Saturday, Oct. 27, and William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 28, to finish up the regular season. Carolina will host the ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill on Nov. 1, 2 and 4.
