CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team opened its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on a high note and handed Wake Forest its first defeat of the season Saturday with a 3-2 win at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels are now 9-1 overall, 1-0 in the ACC. No. 3 Wake is also 9-1 overall, 1-1 in the ACC.
"This was a big win for us and a confidence builder for our team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Wake Forest is coming off a win over (No. 1) Maryland and had beaten us three times last season."
Both teams return to action on Sunday, with Wake Forest hosting William & Mary and UNC traveling to face No. 17 Duke.
On Saturday, Wake Forest junior Jemima Cameron scored first, on a penalty corner with 21:05 remaining in the first half. UNC answered with a goal by Abbey Woolley on the Tar Heels' first penalty corner of the game, with 11:56 left before halftime. With the score tied at 1-1, UNC drew a penalty corner with no time remaining on the first-half clock. After failing to score on the first, the Tar Heels drew another corner and got a goal from senior Kristen McCann to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Both teams scored from the field in the second half. With 16:14 remaining in the game, McCann tallied her 12th goal of the season with an assist from junior Abby Martin. Wake Forest drew within a point with an unassisted goal by sophomore Heather Aughinbaugh with 7:26 remaining.
"Our players know they didn't put together their best effort," Wake coach Jennifer Averill said. "We were successful when we stuck to our gameplan."
Sunday's game, scheduled for 3 p.m. at Duke's East Campus Turf Field, is the second meeting of the season between UNC and Duke. The Tar Heels won 3-0 in their season opener on Aug. 26.
