Carolina Nips Duke 2-1 In Field Hockey

DURHAM, N.C. -- The fifth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team continued its dominance over No. 17 Duke Sunday as the Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils 2-1 at Williams Field. The win was UNC's 44th straight victory over Duke, a streak that dates back to October 13, 1981. The win improves North Carolina to 10-1 this season, 2-0 in the ACC, while Duke drops to 5-7, 0-1 in the ACC.
North Carolina struck first at 28:04 in the first half when junior back Abby Martin scored her fourth goal of the year to give the Tar Heels an early 1-0 lead on a penalty corner.
Duke answered at the 14:45 mark when senior back Courtney Sommer scored on a penalty corner to tie the score 1-1 at the half.
With 9:42 remaining in the game, UNC's Kristen McCann tipped in Jana Toepel's pass to give the Tar Heels the 2-1 victory. The goal was the team-leading 13th of the season for McCann, a senior forward.
With the victory, North Carolina takes a 9-0 lead in the race for the newly-established Carlyle Cup, which will be awarded based on head-to-head competition between North Carolina and Duke. Sunday's game was the fourth contest of the competition.
UNC is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Norfolk, Va., to face Princeton. The Tar Heels return home to Francis E. Henry Stadium on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game with Radford.
