DURHAM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team employed two-goal performances by senior midfielder Raven McDonald and freshman midfielder Maggie Tomecka to help defeat TCU 6-0 Sunday afternoon before 598 fans at Koskinen Stadium in the Duke adidas Classic.
The victory over the Horned Frogs extended Carolina's modest winning streak to four matches, all by shutout. UNC improved to 10-1 on the season while the Horned Frogs lost their third in a row and fell to 5-5-1.
The Tar Heels dominated the match, outshooting TCU 33-1 and earning 15 corner kicks to zero for the Frogs. UNC junior goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett notched her fifth shutout of the season, all recorded in the last six games.
Carolina scored first as at the 16:21 mark as junior midfielder Anne Remy's strike from outside the box caromed off the crossbar and was alertly headed home by McDonald. Carolina padded the lead just before halftime as senior defender Kalli Kamholz finished off a corner kick sequence at 42:27. Tomecka and freshman Catherine Reddick both merited assists.
The goal by Kamholz started a spurt of three UNC goals in just 6:35. Coming out of the intermission, UNC scored its third goal as McDonald tallied an unassisted score at 46:49, driving a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right shelf. Just 2:13 after that goal Tomecka celebrated the first goal of her Carolina career as she rocketed another shot into the upper right shelf, this time from 20 yards out dead center. Fellow freshman Alyssa Ramsey assisted on the goal.
At 71:45 senior forward Meredith Florance scored her team leading 13th goal of the season as she headed in a cross from junior midfielder Jena Kluegel. Tomecka finished off the Tar Heel scoring at 87:09 as she redirected a corner kick by Reddick with her head into the back of the netting.
Carolina will return to conference play this Friday when the #4 Tar Heels play host to #8 Duke Friday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
