DURHAM, N.C. - Fourth-ranked North Carolina parlayed stingy defense and a pair of goals by senior forward Meredith Florance into an easy 4-0 win over William & Mary Friday night in the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium.
The Tar Heels limited the Tribe to two shots on goal and goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett stretched her streak of scoreless minutes to more than 285 over the last four games in improving to 9-1-0 on the season. The Tribe fell to 6-3-0 on the season with the loss.
Carolina, which took 20 shots on goal, broke through at the 23:16 mark when sophomore striker Susan Bush broke free a rocketed a 30-yard shot past Tribe goalkeeper Courtney Owen. Defender Julia Marslender started the play with a pass from the Tar Heel end which was flicked on marvelously by the head of forward Alyssa Ramsey. Bush gathered in the ball, beat her defender and froze Owen with a shot that skimmed off the the bottom of the crossbar and into the upper left corner.
Exactly 15 minutes later the Tar Heels increased their lead to 2-0 as Florance scored the first of her two goals with a bullet into the lower right corner from 15 yards away. She was assisted by Kim Patrick and Danielle Borgman.
Just 5:09 into the second half Florance scored again as she gathered in a ball on the Tar Heel side of midfield, split the final line of defense and then went in on Owen one-one-one for her 12th goal of the season. Florance now has 119 career points to rank 12th in UNC history. Florance needs 10 more points to tie Shannon Higgins (1986-89) for 11th place. She has now scored 45 career goals, also 12th in UNC history just one goal behind Carrie Serwetnyk (1984-87).
Carolina finished the scoring at the 74:24 mark when Danielle Borgman scored her first goal since her freshman year after a series of passes in the Tribe penalty area. Borgman, who now has four career goals, moved up to the forward line after Tina Murphy subbed in on defense at 66:51. She took advantage of the chance, scoring off assists by Raven McDonald and Anne Remy.
The Tar Heels will be in action again on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they play TCU in second day action at the Duke adidas Classic in Durham.
