CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team grabbed the lead just minutes into Sunday's game with Virginia and never trailed in earning a 3-1 win against visiting Virginia at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Playing before a crowd of 621, the No. 2 Tar Heels improved to 6-1 on the season, while No. 7 Virginia fell to 3-2.
Senior back Erin Cox scored the second goal of her career just three minutes and 19 seconds into the game to put UNC up early. At the 29:40 mark, senior Holly Huff scored on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Abby Martin, to make the score 2-0. A goal by junior Abbey Woolley put the Tar Heels up 3-0 with three minutes remaining in the half.
Virginia's Lorraine Vizzuso scored her team's only goal of the game on a penalty corner with 52 seconds remaining in the first half.
"I was pleased with the quick start," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was nice to go ahead and get some points on the board. I'm a little concerned about our lack of scoring in the second half, but I think that can be attributed partly to Virginia settling into its game. I look forward to a very good week of practice before we play again next weekend."
Carolina's next game is Saturday, Sept. 23, at the University of Richmond. The following day, the Tar Heels play at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Both games are set for 1 p.m.
