Chapel Hill, N.C. -- No. 14 North Carolina held off UNC Greensboro for a hard-fought 4-3 non-conference baseball win Tuesday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
Junior lefty Ryan Snare got the win after giving up just one earned run over 6.2 innings for the Tar Heels. Snare struck out five and walked three in winning his team-high ninth game of the season. Derrick DePriest, ranked second in the nation with a 1.38 ERA, allowed just one unearned run in 2.1 innings for his 11th save of the year.
The Spartans used six different pitchers in the contest, but Aaron Horne was charged with the loss after surrendering two fourth-inning runs in 0.2 innings of work.
UNC Greensboro jumped out to a lead in the third inning behind Shane Schumaker's RBI triple off the wall in right field which scored Jesse Martin. Schumaker later scored on a miscue by third baseman Clay Hooper to give UNCG the 2-0 advantage.
Dan Moylan's sac fly in the bottom half of the third brought Carolina to within 2-1 and Ryan Earey put the Tar Heels ahead with a two-run single in the fourth off of Horne.
Tyrell Godwin's sacrifice fly to right in the seventh scored Adam Greenberg and gave the Tar Heels a 4-2 cushion. Carolina loaded the bases in the seventh, but Ryan Gordon struck out pinch hitter Sean Farrell to end the inning and post his 100th strikeout of the season.
UNC Greensboro added an unearned run in the top of the eighth for its final run, but with two runners on base and just one out, DePriest got out of the jam.
At 40-11, Carolina has posted its third straight 40-win season for just the second time in school history. The B.J. Surhoff-led Tar Heels won 40-plus games in three straight years from 1983-85. Tonight's loss drops UNC Greensboro to 32-19.
The Tar Heels are back in action again tomorrow evening when they host Winthrop at Boshamer Stadium. Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with lefty Eric Henderson set to pitch for Carolina.
