CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team beat visiting Massachusetts 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium to improve to 7-1 on the season. The third-ranked Tar Heels play again on Sunday, hosting eighth-ranked James Madison (6-1).
Carolina led 3-0 at halftime of Saturday's game after two goals by junior forward Kristen McCann and one by junior Holly Huff, who came off the bench to score. Sophomore forward Abbey Woolley, who assisted on McCann's first goal, added another UNC goal in the second half. UMass freshman Krysta Johnson got her team on the board with 8:28 to play. All of the game's goals were scored from the field.
McCann's goals were her fifth and sixth of the season and follow her game-winner in last weekend's 1-0 win over Virginia. "Kristen has been our most consistent player all year," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I'm delighted to see her experiencing the success that she is. I was also really pleased with Holly Huff - we put her in in the midfield and she hustled and scored a goal."
Sunday's game is set for 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels lead the series with James Madison 20-5-1, but the most recent meeting was a win for the Dukes, 5-4 in Harrisonburg, Va., on Oct. 9, 1998.
