The Stanford Cardinal scored five unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and take a 7-4 victory over North Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif. The Cardinal moves into Sunday's first game, while UNC will play Nevada later Saturday night.
Carolina led 4-2 going into the top of the ninth before one bad play killed the Heels. Damien Alavarado led off the inning with a double to center, but Nick Day flied to center for the first out. Edmund Muth then grounded to short, but Clay Hooper bobbled the ball and threw wild to first with Alvarado scoring and Muth ending up on second. After Eric Bruntlett grounded out to third, Craig Thompson singled to right to tie the score at 4-4. Jeff Rizzo ripped a single to right, followed by a three-run homer to left by John Gall for a 7-4 Stanford lead.
Stanford scored single runs in the second and seventh before UNC came back with three runs in the seventh on just one hit. Matt McCay led off the inning with a single, then Stanford starter Justin Wade walked Jarrett Shearin, Jay Madiera and Ryan Blake to make it 2-1 Stanford. Tony Cogan came on in relief and hit Dan Moylan with a pitch to force in a run and tie the score at 2-2. Hooper then grounded into a double play with Madiera scoring.
The Heels picked up another run in the eighth to go up 4-2. Tyrell Godwin doubled to center, moved to second on a wild pick-off attempt and scored on a wild pitch.
Kyle Snyder started and went 7.2 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits while striking out six.
Cogan picked up the win in relief, giving up one run in 3.0 innings.
