Heels Top UNC-Charlotte 7-2 At Boshamer

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Jarrett Shearn became the eighth player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to record both 200 career runs scored and 200 RBI Tuesday night as North Carolina defeated UNC Charlotte, 7-2, at Boshamer Stadium. Shearin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in the game, giving him 201 career runs and 201 career RBI.
With the win, Carolina improved to 30-8 on the season. UNC Charlotte fell to 17-15
Tar Heel pitchers struck out 13 batters in the game. Chris Elmore (3-0) picked up the victory, striking out seven and walking none while allowing two runs in 5.0 innings. Michael Horney came in to relieve Elmore to start the sixth inning and pitched three hitless, shutout innings, striking out five. Ryan Snare pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one. John McKay (5-6) took the loss for UNC Charlotte.
The 49ers got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top of the third with two outs. Josh McMillen reached first when Elmore hit him with a pitch and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Bowman. Bradley Smith then hit an RBI double to right-centerfield to score McMillen. Jason Hill followed with a single to center that scored Smith and gave the 49ers a 2-0 lead.
The Tar Heels took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Clay Hooper led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by Smith, the 49er shortstop. Tyrell Godwin followed with a single up the middle that sent Hooper to second. Shearin loaded the bases with no outs when McMillen lost his fly ball in the lights in leftfield. Earey hit a two-run double over Bowman's head in centerfield that scored Hooper and Godwin. Matt McCay followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Shearin.
Carolina added a run in the fifth. Wes Reynolds led off the inning with a single and went to third on a single by Dan Moylan. Shearin drove in his 200th career run when he plated Reynolds with a sacrifice fly.
UNC added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when 49er relievers Brion Treadway and John Whittington walked five Tar Heels, allowed a stolen base and threw a wild pitch.
Carolina returns to action Friday evening in the first game of a three-game weekend series with ACC rival Virginia at Boshamer Stadium.
