Heels Win A Sloppy 10-9 Affair Against UVA

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Tyrell Godwin scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as North Carolina nipped Virginia, 10-9, in an error-filled contest at Boshamer Stadium Friday night. The two teams combined for nine errors, with Carolina committing a season-high five, and 13 walks. With the win, Carolina improved to 31-8 on the season, 6-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia fell to 15-25, 5-10 ACC.
Derrick DePriest (5-4) picked up the win for the Tar Heels, pitching 7.0 of strong relief. DePriest allowed one earned run and six hits to pick up the victory. Tim LaVigne (1-2) took the loss for Virginia. Starting pitchers Brandon Creswell and Mike Bynum were both driven from the game in the third inning. Creswell gave up eight runs and eight hits while walking four in 2.1 innings. Bynum allowed five earned runs on four hits and five walks for Carolina.
Godwin went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Carolina. Jarrett Shearin and Ryan Earey also each drove in two runs. Jon Benick and Mark Rueffert each went 3-for-5 for Virginia.
Carolina grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on three singles and two Creswell walks. Dan Moylan led off with a walk and went to third on a single by Shearin. Earey followed with a single to left that scored Moylan and sent Shearin to third. Godwin hit an RBI single that scored Shearin and Matt McCay drove in Earey with a sacrifice fly.
Virginia put two runs on the board in the top of the second as Bynum walked three batters and gave up an RBI double by Dan Street. Cav leftfielder Michael Floyd scored on a wild pitch by Bynum.
The Tar Heels added three more runs in the second, sending nine batters to the plate in the inning and tallying four singles and a walk. Earey and Godwin drove in runs with singles and Shearin drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
The Cavaliers drove UNC starter Mike Bynum from the game and tied the score in the top of the third. In the inning, Virginia scored four runs on two singles, two walks and three UNC errors. Rueffert drove in a run with a single, LaVigne drove in a run with a fielder's choice LaVigne later scored on an error by UNC shortstop Clay Hooper.
Carolina came right back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third, taking an 8-6 lead and driving Virginia starting pitcher Brandon Creswell from the game. Designated hitter Wes Reynolds led off by reaching on an error and advanced to third on a ground-rule double down the leftfield line by Moylan. Reynolds scored on another Cav error and Shearin drove in Moylan with a groundout.
Virginia scored a single run in the fifth off DePriest when David Stone drew a bases-loaded walk. The Tar Heels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when McCay doubled and scored on a single by pinch hitter Ryan Mathews. The Cavaliers cut the lead to 9-8 in the top of the seventh when they scored an unearned run off DePriest when LaVigne led off with a single, advanced to second on an error by Hooper, took third on a sacrifice and scored on a 6-3-5 double play, crossing the plate before the third out was recorded.
Godwin's game-winner came in the eighth. He led off the inning with a single to left, took second on a balk and scored when LaVigne committed an error on McCay's sacrifice.
The Tar Heels and Cavaliers will play Game 2 of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
