NORFOLK, Va. - Sixth-ranked North Carolina beat Old Dominion, the defending national champion, 2-1 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. The win over the Lady Monarchs was the second of the season for UNC. The Tar Heels beat ODU 1-0 at home on Sept. 18.
Seventh-ranked ODU is now 13-6 overall (5-0 CAA) and the Tar Heels improve to 14-4 overall (2-2 ACC).
Old Dominion opened Saturday's scoring with a Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) goal at the 32:11 mark in the first half. Sophomore Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.) assisted on the play.
North Carolina tied the game on a goal by junior Jana Toepel (Perkiomenville, Pa.) with 20:43 left in the first half. The game remained 1-1 at the end of regulation and it was Toepel who eventually scored again. Her second goal of the day came on the Tar Heels' fifth penalty corner of the overtime period, at the 7:15 mark. Toepel missed the first ODU game of the season because she was competing in Australia as a part of the U.S. National Team.
Both teams return to action on Sunday, with UNC playing at William & Mary and Old Dominion hosting Princeton.
